Goal-shy Cheltenham still haven’t scored all season and set unwanted EFL record

Cheltenham Town have set a new Football League record after their goalless start to the season extended to nine matches.

The Robins lost 3-0 at home to Stevenage on Saturday (September 23) afternoon – an eighth defeat in their first nine League One matches of the season, with their only point coming from a goalless draw away at Portsmouth last month.

Remarkably, they've failed to find the back of the net in any of those games, which is now officially the longest run without scoring a goal at the start of a season in EFL history. They also lost 2-0 in the first round of the Carabao Cup to Birmingham City.

They did get on the scoreboard in a 4-1 EFL Trophy defeat to Bristol Rovers. But even that was an own-goal by the opposition, with their severe struggles in front of goal seeing head coach Wade Elliott leaving by mutual consent earlier this week.

Reflecting on their latest defeat, interim boss Kevin Russell told the club website: “In a strange sort of way, I thought between both boxes we were the better team by a mile.

“Some of the football we played was really good but games of football are won and lost on what happens in the two boxes. We’ve got to be better, more clinical and it has been like that all season but if they keep playing like that, they will get results.”

Cheltenham have been hit hard by the summer departure of Alfie May, who hit 23 and 20 league goals in back-to-back seasons before departing to join Charlton Athletic in the summer. He has four goals in their first seven matches in start contrast to his former side's record.
