Sunday's league clash between Granada and Athletic Club was abandoned after a fan died in the stands.

La Liga fans and journalists sent their condolences after it was circulated that a Granada supporter had suffered a cardiac arrest at the Estadio Nuevo Los Carmenes. The incident occurred in the 17th minute of the match, which was temporarily halted before the two clubs decided to call it off altogether.

It's understood the supporter was rushed to hospital in an ambulance after being taken from their seat. However, it was confirmed shortly afterward that they had died.

La Liga authorities confirmed the match will be rescheduled to be played at a later date, which will be announced in due course. Other clubs from the Spanish top flight also expressed their sadness after the news emerged.

"FC Barcelona expresses its deepest condolences to the loved ones of the fan who passed away during the game between Granada and Athletic Club," read a statement from the Catalan kingpins. "Rest in peace."

Valencia's English account on X (formerly Twitter) posted: "Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the fan who lost his life in the Granada-Athletic match."

Players initially remained on the field while medical staff entered the stands to treat the fan in question. However, both sets of players were then ordered back to the dressing room after it became apparent the situation was more dire than first thought.
