Football Digest: Liverpool start the season strong
The Saudi Arabian transfer window slammed shut last night marking the end of what has been a tumultuous period. Saudi Pro League teams spent in excess of £700million on various big-name signings including Neymar, Karim Benzema, Riyad Mahrez, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.
But there were plenty of players they couldn’t tie down onto lucrative deals. Reigning champions Al-Ittihad were unable to tempt Mohamed Salah away from Anfield while attempts to secure Arsenal’s Gabriel Megahales’ signature also failed.
According to reports coming out of Saudi Arabia, the President of the Saudi Federation met with Gabriel in London last month to discuss the possibility of him moving to Al-Ittihad. It is also understood that Salah’s entourage met with Saudi officials in Dubai around the same time.
Yet both men remain at their respective clubs as does Jadon Sancho. The Englishman was subject to interest from Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq on deadline day after his recent spat with manager Erik ten Hag. Al-Ettifaq explored a straight loan deal but it was too late in the window to build any type of momentum, especially given the uncertainty surrounding the situation of starting right winger Antony.

Man City raid Chelsea
Manchester City are planning to raid Chelsea in January with club executives reportedly plotting a shock move for full-back Ian Maatsen. According to Planet Sport, City are closely monitoring the contract situation of the 21-year-old Dutch defender, who has one year remaining on his deal at Stamford Bridge.
Ten Hag problem
The only major transfer window that remains open is Turkey’s. They still have seven days to do business and one player that has been heavily linked with a move to the Turkish Super Lig is Manchester United’s Donny van de Beek. Erik ten Hag has deemed him surplus to requirements but may be stuck with him until January with little progress being made on a move to either Galatasaray or Fenerbache.
