Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag urged to play McTominay after Glazers sack demand

Man Utd players' feelings towards Jadon Sancho after latest Erik ten Hag spat

Former Rangers manager Ally McCoist has suggested that it’s time for Manchester United to hand Scott McTominay a run of games. McTominay’s incredible form goalscoring streak for Scotland continued on Friday, scoring and assisting in a 3-0 win against Cyprus.

Scotland are on the verge of qualifying for Euro 2024 as they sit atop Group A after five wins from as many games, including against Spain and Norway.

And McTominay has played a key role in Steve Clarke’s side’s uprising, scoring six goals in the campaign so far.

McTominay also netted against Georgia after back-to-back braces against Cyprus and Spain at the start of qualifying.

His tally makes him UEFA qualifying’s joint-top goalscorer alongside former United striker Romelu Lukaku and £72million new boy Rasmus Hojlund.

But at club level, McTominay has made just two substitute appearances in home wins against Wolves and Nottingham Forest this season.

And McCoist believes it’s time Ten Hag considered giving the 26-year-old a chance in his midfield on the back of his eye-catching displays for his nation.

“Do you know something? Am I getting a bit carried away? McTominay – is he not due a little run [at United]? He was different class again [against Cyprus],” McCoist told talkSPORT.

“He’s top scorer at this moment in time in the tournament [Euro 2024 qualifying]. It’s amazing.

“Do you know something? For a couple of games, Steve [Clarke] was playing him as a right-centre-back in a three, which was fine because needs must in some occasions, as we know.

“But he’s miles better further forward. And he’s been doing that, and he’s been different class. A couple of goals against Spain, another goal [against Cyprus], a header in the six-yard box.

“He has been terrific, and a lot of Scottish supporters are thinking, ‘why is he not in this Manchester United team?'”

McCoist’s comments follow former United star Paul Parker’s more explosive take on who Ten Hag should field against Brighton and Hove Albion.

Parker claimed fans would want the Glazers to sack the Dutchman if Anthony Martial starts instead of Hojlund at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Hojlund has been waiting in the wings for his first start as he recovered from a back injury but made his debut off the bench against Arsenal last time out.

The 20-year-old striker is expected to replace Martial against Brighton, but McTominay may be left out of the starting lineup again despite his inspired international form.
