‘Conor Benn must wait – no boxer should fight without a licence’

Connor Benn needs to allow the process of the UK Anti-Doping and British Boxing Board of Control appeal to be settled before he fights on these shores.

That’s the process. He should have a BBBofC licence before he boxes here. That’s the rules and that’s the way it should work.

Benn provided two adverse analytical findings for the banned substance Clomifene in tests given to the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association last year.

There’s a process to go through and we are awaiting the outcome of that appeal to lift his temporary suspension. In my view, no boxer should be fighting until they are given a licence.

Now I know people will point to Jarrell Miller fighting Daniel Dubois on our show in Saudi Arabia on December 23. Now Miller will be licensed to box on that event after dealing with his own drug test failures.

The BBBofC rules are not there for you to like them. They’re there to administer the sport.

They’re there to ensure there are no abuses in a dangerous sport that can lead to unfair advantages which can then lead to serious injuries. It doesn’t matter if I like them or if Conor Benn likes them. They’re the guidelines.

When you take your licence out, they are the rules and regulations. We should get on with it and get over it.

Benn is nearly two years out of the ring in the UK – he did have a recent fight in Florida. So he could have served a two-year ban almost already.

It’s not been good for Benn, he has not come out of this well. The sport has not come out of it good and it’s not good for the fans.

If he has a licence then he should be allowed to fight but if he hasn’t then he shouldn’t be allowed to fight here. That’s as matter of fact as I can be in the situation.
