Karting star’s ankle smashed in horror accident at FIA World Championships

Karting star Joe Turney suffered a horror injury at the FIA Karting World Championships in Franciacorta, Italy, after having his ankle smashed by a fellow racer as he pushed his single-seater down the track. The incident occurred after Turney was overtaken by Brazilian Gabriel Gomez on Lap 10 for the lead in the fight for the world crown.

Turney came back at his opponent and regained the lead but a coming-together saw both drivers end up off the track and in the grass, allowing eight rivals to pass. With both of their World Championship hopes dashed, Turney decided he wasn’t going to give up just yet.

The Kart Republic driver pushed his vehicle back onto the track in a bid to salvage something from the race. However, his kart found itself positioned in the middle of the track, and Turney on the inside, which put him in harm’s way as Spaniard Nacho Tunon smashed into his ankle on the way through in shocking scenes.

The Brit was then unable to get back to his feet as a race marshal dashed to help him. In a later clip under yellow flag conditions, Turney could be seen laying on the grass next to the track and a stretcher being brought over to where he was placed.

The yellow flag was then upgraded to a red flag, bringing the race to a grinding halt. Following the restart, it was Russian Kirill Kutskov who crossed the chequered flag in first, followed by Holland’s Rene’ Lammers in second, and Japan’s Kean Nakamura-Berta in third.

Turney suffered a compound fracture and underwent surgery on Sunday, the Daily Express Sport has learned. “It was a very difficult day for Joe,” the driver’s management said. “He was taken to hospital with a compound fracture and was in a lot of pain. He is currently undergoing surgery.” The incident has drawn massive attention on social media, with one X user saying: “Desperation to get back into the race and probably didn’t realize he was back on the racing line.”

Questions have also been asked as to why he was allowed to push his kart back onto the track. Another X user added: “That’s a broken ankle, how the hell did they let this happen!?”

A third said: “My heart goes out to Joe Turney. The incident sends chills down your spine. Glad to see him conscious. Get well, and get back on the slopes in good health soon!!”
