Mosconi Cup ace involved in ‘strangest lag ever’ as fans moan at ‘barmy’ rule

Mosconi Cup fans were left annoyed that Team USA pool ace Skyler Woodward was given a chance to re-take his opening lag break after he potted the red.

Held at the Alexandra Palace, the nine-ball pool tournament, which is essentially the Ryder Cup of pool, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year with Team Europe seeking to defend their title they won last year in Las Vegas. Europe have won the last three iterations of the tournament too and are firmly in control, taking a 9-2 lead come close of play on Friday.

But fans at the Ally Pally were left incensed as boos rained down when Woodward, facing off against Jayson Shaw of Team Europe, was handed a second opportunity during the lag break after he had potted the red during his initial shot.

The Team USA star looked slightly bemused after the red dropped into the table pocket, with fans thinking that by doing so, Shaw would be given the chance to decide who broke during their match. However, he was then handed a do-over, which fans were not happy about.

And then to make matters worse, Woodward then produced a textbook lag break, nestling his second shot about as close to the table cushion as possible, handing him the break against Shaw.

Luckily for Shaw and Team Europe, the 33-year-old Scot went on to dismantle Woodward, winning the match 5-1. But that did not stop fans on social media from giving their thoughts on the weird scenario that played out.

One fan commented: "barmy rule to replay the lag." A second said: "Ridiculous to repeat, he lost the lag!"
