People discover the New Zealand basketball team nickname – and it’s brilliant

The nickname of New Zealand's basketball team has left fans chuckling who only recently discovered their moniker.

While rugby is the national sport of the country, they also possess a respectable basketball team who are ranked 21st in the world. The All Blacks are the celebrities in New Zealand and have captured the respect and amazement of fans across the world for their impressive play, demonstrative performance of the haka and their all-black uniforms.

The all-black uniforms is a theme across New Zealand sport with the football team donning it in away games while the basketball team wear it as their main kit. You'd think that maybe they would share the all-black nickname with the rugby team but you'll be wrong as their nickname are the 'Tall Blacks'.

It certainly fits well as fans who recently discovered it had a laugh on social media with one X user writing: "Discovered this last year. Isn't it glorious?" while another commented: "Oh, that's magnificent". A third mentioned the nickname of another New Zealand sports team as their comment read: "The hockey team are called the black sticks but the tall blacks is magnificent".

The basketball team certainly has much work to do in their quest to become one of the leading nations in the sport but they've had to contend with their most famous player never actually playing for the national team. NBA star Steven Adams has never turned out for the team after falling out with Basketball NZ.
