Golf ace Rory McIlroy has insisted he will be "sensible" on his friend's upcoming stag do – just days before the Ryder Cup gets underway.

The biennial golf competition is set to be held in Italy this year at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club, with the Ryder Cup set to begin on September 30.

But just days prior to teeing off in Rome, McIlroy will be out partying on the Greek island of Mykonos on a friend's stag go, which could be a cause of concern for Europe captain Luke Donald.

However, despite Mykonos' party loving reputation, the Northern Irish golfer has reassured his captain he will be on his best behaviour, ensuring he will be in top condition as Europe look to win back the Ryder Cup following their 2021 defeat to the US.

"I’m sensible when I need to be," a smiling McIlroy said at a press conference ahead of the Horizon Irish Open, which begins today at The K Club in Kildare.

"48 hours, nice little trip, and probably needed as well. [I go] from here to practise in Rome next week, to Wentworth. I get back into London on Wednesday evening and then four good days in London to practise and get myself ready to go to Rome on the Monday."

McIlroy had previously claimed he would need "a few days to dry out" after the stag do.

But thankfully for the world no.2, while his captain Donald could have had concerns about the trip to Greece just days before the Ryder Cup gets underway, the 45-year-old trusts the Northern Irish golfer to be on his best behaviour.

"It’s not like Rory is 22 or 21. He understands," said Donald. "There’s nothing wrong in going out and having some fun with your friends. But I think he’s got wise enough shoulders to know that he won’t go crazy, so no concerns there."

Last time Europe and the US faced off for the Ryder Cup back in 2021, the US claimed a 19-9 win at Whistling Straights in Wisconsin, which proved to be a record victory for Steve Stricker's team.
