Michael Schumacher health question ‘always gets same answer’ from F1 reporter

Formula One reporter Florian König has revealed the “same answer” he gives to every fan that asks about Michael Schumacher’s health.

Racing legend Schumacher, 54, has been out of the public eye since suffering a life-altering injury while skiing in the French Alps in December 2013. The seven-time F1 champion’s family have kept details surrounding Schumacher’s current health private since he came out of a medically induced coma and continued his rehabilitation at home all those years ago.

But a new five-part documentary entitled ‘Being Michael Schumacher’, covering the German’s journey from go-karting talent to motorsport legend, could shed light on how he is faring ten years on from the horrifying accident. And German presenter König has now offered his own stance on the Schumacher family fiercely protecting the Ferrari icon's privacy.

Speaking to German broadcaster ARD ahead of the five-part documentary’s release, König said: "Whenever someone speaks to me, at the airport or elsewhere, the question often comes up: 'Do you know how Michael is doing? Do you know what's going on now?'

"I always say the same thing: I don't ask the family at all. I absolutely respect the fact that they only gave very sparse information, and I think that's right.”

The 56-year-old added: "I notice from these questions that people are still interested and that they still share in his fate."

It follows the release of a 2021 Netflix documentary in which Schumacher’s wife Corinna refused to offer little else other than the fact he was “different” post-crash. Others have dropped similar updates since, with former F1 journalist and friend of Schumacher, Roger Benoit, recently claiming his condition is a “case without hope”.

Speaking to Grosvenor Sport on the back of Benoit’s comments, Schumacher’s former Benetton team-mate Johnny Herbert said: “There’s never any news. What we do know is we never hear any positive news.

“That’s the horrible thought that he is still not able to be close to the Michael that we all remember. And that is very sad.”
