Bruno Fernandes carried a wreath onto the pitch at Bramall Lane ahead of kick-off as Manchester United paid tribute to the late legend, Sir Bobby Charlton.

It was announced today that Sir Bobby passed away at the age of 86 after a battle with dementia.

Ahead of kick-off at Bramall Lane, the United skipper carried a wreath onto the pitch to honour Charlton’s passing.

Fans at Old Trafford have adorned the stadium with floral tributes paying respects to the midfielder who enjoyed so much success at the Theatre of Dreams, scoring 249 goals in 758 appearances between 1956 and 1973.

Boss Erik Ten Hag also led tributes to the former midfielder: ‘He’s an example for everyone and I think not only the football world has lost him, big person, but the whole of society. Throughout the whole world.’

‘Very sad news. I never had the honour of meeting him, but what I heard, what I see, what I read, he was an outstanding gentleman and person. Outstanding off the pitch and on the pitch.

‘If you see how many games he played for Manchester United and England, the goals he scored, it was magnificent. But also as a person, what I heard was so dear and so humble and if you achieve what he did and stay like this as a person then that is outstanding. You are not only a legend, but a giant.’ Ten Hag added.

Scott McTominay also offered his condolences on the news, saying that they want to ‘thank him for what he’s done for the game.

‘Everyone who’s grown up watching him over the years have just got to thank him for what he’s done for the game, and we want to repay that tonight to his family.’ McTominay added.

The Scot added that ‘it’s devastating’, and that ‘he’s an icon at the football club and all over the world, as everyone knew him as a legend of the game.

‘More importantly, he was known for being an incredible guy as well, who’s helped this football club so, so much over the years. For me it’s tough, but everyone is going into this game tonight thinking of him, and want to do the best for Bobby.

Jamie Redknapp spoke on the former England legend: ‘He’s our greatest ever England player that’s for sure. Left foot, right foot, it didn’t matter he was the cleanest striker of the ball we’ve ever produced.

‘In a day and age when the ball was really tough to kick, he had a beautiful strike of a football. 49 goals in 106 games for England as a midfield player was just phenomenal.

‘I remember my Dad telling me stories about when he played against him he was so elegant he used to just glide around a football pitch. Pure class. Its such a sad day for football but also a day we should celebrate and be so happy we had someone as good as this.

‘Really appreciate what an icon, a legend Sir Bobby Charlton was – one of the greats.

Tributes have been pouring in for the former England legend, who was notably celebrated for winning the World Cup in 1966 – the same year he won the Ballon d’Or – and a prolific career at Old Trafford.
