Europa Conference League chaos as bath towels are used to dry soaking wet pitch

European nights rarely go to plan, with teams ripping up the script on many occasions.

However, staff at Olimpija Ljubljana wouldn't have been expecting to be attempting to dry with pitch with towels. The Slovenian champions had tried every method under the sun to ensure their clash with Lille in the Europa Conference League went ahead – including drying the pitch with a load of towels.

Footage emerged on social media of members of the club on their hands and knees try to soak up any moisture on the surface at the Stožice Stadium. And their efforts were rewarded, with the game going ahead.

Lille extended their gap at the top of Group A, as they beat the Slovenian side 2-0 away from home. Slovan Bratislava remain second in the group after they survived a scare during a trip to the Faroe Islands.

Slovan and Lille will now go head-to-head on the final matchday of the group stages in two weeks for top spot of the group – with both sides already assured of a spot in the knockout rounds.

Ljubljana are set to finish bottom of the group, unless they can beat KI Klaksvik, who made history just by being in the competition.
