Football club earned more selling beer than selling players over past 12 months

Dutch side FC Twente have revealed they earned more money flogging beer than selling players over the past 12 months.

The Dutch side, who play in the Eredivisie, saw current Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag play out the final seasons of his career at the club. And they almost tasted UEFA Cup success in the 70s – but that hasn't stopped them from earning more money through alcohol than on the pitch.

Twente published their accounts for the year earlier this month, earning £5.18m in catering profits – more than the £3.24m profit they earned through player sales. Dutch journalist Tom Knipping said, via the Daily Mail: "It's strange that FC Twente makes more money on beer than on players.

"I don't see anywhere else in Europe where a club earns more on beer than on football players."

It shouldn't be surprising that Twente have managed to accomplish this feat – their stadium is called the De Grolsch Veste [The Grolsch Fortress], and it's sponsored by the local beer maker in Enschede.

In the Netherlands, fans can drink while they watch the game, unlike here in the UK – where fans in the top five divisions are forbidden from drinking alcohol within sight of the pitch.

However, they take that to the extreme at Twente, with a fan going viral in 2021 by carrying a stack of 64 pints loaded into cardboard trays to his seat. Christiaan Roetgering, a Twente fan, joked he didn't want to keep going back to the bar.

He said: "I always go to the game with a group of friends, and each time one of us has the job of getting the beers in. This time it was my turn, and I didn't fancy having to keep going back and forth to the bar. So I decided to get everything in one visit!"
