Paedophile Barry Bennell has died at the age of 69, with the disgraced former Manchester City scout having passed away in prison.

The ex-football coach died at HMP Littlehey in Cambridgeshire on Saturday morning according to the Sun. During the 1980s and 1990s, Bennell was a youth coach for Crewe Alexandra, Man City and Stoke City, as well as having further ties to youth teams across a number of English counties, including Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire.

The former football scout used his position as a means to groom and sexually abuse the boys in his care. He was first jailed back in 1994 after it had been found that he abused a teenage boy during a football camp in Florida.

Back in 2018, Bennell was handed a 31 year prison sentenced, being described as the "devil incarnate" by Judge Clement Goldstone QC, who sentenced him at Liverpool Crown Court for 50 counts of child sexual abuse.

Following his first arrest in 1994, Bennell's predatory manner was further exposed by Channel 4's Dispatches in 1997. The broadcaster released 'Soccer's Foul Play', which investigated how predatory football coaches were able to go undetected and enact vile abuses upon the boys in their care.

Prior to his sentencing in 2018, Bennell had already been imprisoned three times across 20 years for sexual abusing boys. However, his 2018 sentencing found him guilty of a further 43 sexual offences, with Bennell described as a "child molester on a industrial scale".
