Former Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui has revealed that he wants his managerial return to be in England.

Lopetegui hasn’t managed since his departure from Molineux in August but insisted that when he does return to coaching he wants to be back in the Premier League.

The 57-year-old is reportedly ‘very well placed’ to succeed Erik ten Hag as Manchester United boss if the Dutchman is sacked.

Lopetegui described the English top flight as the best league in the world.

He told Sky Sports: ‘It’s why I’ve said no to different countries and different situations because I would like to stay here in England. I feel like our team here is just starting and we want to achieve our dreams.

‘The way the country lives football here is special – it’s the best league in the world, the most competitive league in the world, the best environment for the players, coaches and fans too.’

The former Spain, Real Madrid and Sevilla boss says that it is important to have a project where he is able to put his stamp on the club.

Lopetegui added that he is comfortable fighting for different aims, whether challenging for the title or attempting to avoid relegation.

Lopetegui said: ‘I have fought for titles, I have fought for different aims but of course for the most important thing to feel like you have a project you can put your stamp on it, where you can work and improve the performance of the whole club – if you ask me, I’d like this kind of challenge and to be able to achieve each aim the club has.

‘I have to be ready. When you accept a challenge, it’s not just about the players and the way you want to play… I think you have to understand where you are, what’s the culture of the club and the history too.’

During his time as Wolves manager Lopetegui managed to help the club avoid relegation from the Premier League last season as they finished in 13th place.

However, Lopetegui was in charge of Wolves for less than a year, with his departure coming after disagreements with the board regarding the club’s transfer policy.

Gary O’Neil succeeded him, with Wolves currently in 13th place in the Premier League.

It was also reported by Relevo that Lopetegui turned down an offer worth £15.5million a year to manage in the Saudi Pro League.
