Man City ‘failed to include Sancho-type clause’ in deal with Chelsea for Palmer

Palmer outlines biggest issue with London life after Chelsea move

Manchester City reportedly failed to include a sell-on fee in their summer deal to sell Cole Palmer to Chelsea, ensuring they will not be rewarded should the Blues move him on for big money in the future. Pep Guardiola’s side have recouped significant fees through such clauses in the past, such as Jadon Sancho’s 2021 move to rivals Manchester United.

According to the Daily Mail, City felt confident that after receiving an initial £40million and a further £2.5m in add-ons from Chelsea for Palmer, they had benefited greatly from a player with just a handful of Premier League starts. The guaranteed money was seen as such a high figure that they opted against including a sell-on fee.

City’s insistence on such clauses in previous transfers has seen them receive additional huge fees on players that they have been willing to let go in the past. They sold Sancho to Borussia Dortmund in 2017 for £8m when the academy talent wanted first-team football, but recouped a further £10m when United signed him for £72m four years later.

They received a similar fee when Tottenham bought former youth player Pedro Porro from Sporting Lisbon and also received 20 per cent of Southampton’s sale of Romeo Lavia to Chelsea for £58m in the summer.

Chelsea were said to be pleasantly surprised that no such clause was inserted into the deal to sign Palmer, while his initial start to life at Stamford Bridge has made the signing look like a bargain.

His performances have quickly seen the 21-year-old become a regular in the team under Mauricio Pochettino, scoring four times in six league starts as he has inherited the keys to the Blues’ attack – even earning a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad before making his international debut against Malta.

Guardiola has since opened up on the conversation he had with Palmer before letting the talented youngster leave the Etihad. “I said to him ‘Riyad Mahrez is leaving, you are going to get a chance here’.” Guardiola explained. “’No, I’m not going to play here, I want to leave’, so I said: ‘OK, leave!’”

When asked if he was wary of selling Palmer a potential rival, Guardiola added: “We’d never stop a deal because of that. Why, if the transfer suits both clubs and the player? That means you are a small club.

“Big clubs make decisions for the benefit of all three parties. If a player wants to go to Chelsea or United or Liverpool, what is the problem if they are happy to be there and we are happy with the transfer? Another player comes here and we keep going with a good spirit.”
