Man Utd cull continues as Sir Jim Ratcliffe ‘to axe Murtough’ after transfer woe

Man Utd are making huge changes ahead of Sir Jim Ratcliffe coming into the club | Football Digest

Manchester United’s football director John Murtough is set to be the next top chief to exit the club upon Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s arrival, with the transfer guru reportedly leaving along with Richard Arnold. Chief executive Arnold’s departure was announced on Wednesday as the British billionaire begins his restructure of the Red Devils.

The Daily Star have claimed that Murtough will follow Arnold out the door, with Ratcliffe less than impressed with United’s transfer dealings in recent years as he has already privately criticised the signing of veteran midfielder Casemiro.

Ratcliffe’s deal to purchase a 25 per cent stake in the club for approximately £1.3billion could be announced as soon as next week, though it would need to be ratified for the Premier League which may take as long as eight weeks.

Until then, the INEOS chief is conducting a thorough audit of United – aided by former British Cycling chief Sir Dave Brailsford – as Ratcliffe is poised to take charge of the footballing side of the club.

Murtough became United’s first football director when promoted from his position as the club’s head of football development in 2021, having joined along with David Moyes from Everton eight years prior.

He has overseen transfer business that has largely been criticised while the Red Devils were unable to land major summer targets Declan Rice and Harry Kane, instead opting for the likes of Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund.

Murtough has pulled off big deals for stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Casemiro, Antony and Jadon Sancho during his tenure, but the club has struggled to match their local rivals Manchester City at the top of the table and Ratcliffe clearly feels that change is necessary at the top.

Jean-Claude Blanc, who took the reigns at Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus before joining INEOS to oversee their sporting portfolio, has been linked as a potential replacement for Murtough.

While Crystal Palace’s Dougie Freedman and Paul Mitchell have also been mentioned with the possibility of taking up roles covering recruitment at Old Trafford.
