Paul Scholes hit out at captain Bruno Fernandes and told him to ‘take responsibility’ for his role in Manchester United’s collapse against Galatasaray in the Champions League on Wednesday.

United headed to Turkey looking for their first ever Champions League win away at Galatasaray at the fourth attempt and they looked on course on the hour mark. An early goal from Alejandro Garnacho got the visitors going, before Fernandes and Scott McTominay netted either side of ex-Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech’s free-kick.

Despite Erik ten Hag’s side being 3-1 up, it all fell apart again for United as an Andre Onana howler gifted Ziyech his second of the game before the Cameroonian was caught out at his near post by Kerem Akturkoglu just 10 minutes later as the Red Devils were quickly pegged back to 3-3.

Late chances for Facundo Pellistri were wasted and United were left bottom of the group with qualification to the knockout stages hanging by a thread. Onana came in for heavy and obvious criticism for his three mistakes for every goal but Fernandes’ role was put under the microscope by Scholes for the two ‘stupid’ fouls he gave away which led to both of Ziyech’s goals.

Speaking on TNT Sports at full-time of United’s draw in Turkey, Scholes said: "It was another game where we could have closed the game. We had too many chances, as I've said, and mistakes by ourselves.

“It's too bad, to be honest. I don't want to be too negative, but what we've been doing in the Champions League is not enough. We have to control our games every time, it's not the first game we've had like this."

Talking about United’s captain, Scholes added: "I know in his interview he is talking about mistakes, but he made two big mistakes tonight by giving two stupid fouls away that led to two goals.

"The full team, including himself as the captain, have to take responsibility – it’s a game they should win. They just cannot keep clean sheets – the defence is all over the place, the keeper is making mistakes, Bruno giving away cheap free-kicks. It makes the game difficult for them every time and they don’t need to do that."

United’s inability to find a winning goal now means they must beat confirmed group toppers Bayern Munich at home and need Copenhagen and Galatasaray to draw in Denmark in the final group game.
