VAR official Tomasz Kwiatkowski has been removed from tonight's Champions League schedule after controversially ordering a review of PSG's penalty against Newcastle.
The Pole told fellow countryman Szymon Marciniak to have a second look at a potential handball by Tino Livramento on Tuesday (November 28) night. That's despite the ball bouncing off of Livramento's stomach and onto his elbow.
Referee Marciniak then awarded the spot kick after visiting the monitor. Kwiatkowski was due to take up the same VAR role for Real Sociedad vs RB Salzburg, but he's been stood down with German Marco Fritz replacing him.
It's been suggested the decision is a clear sign UEFA chiefs acknowledge that the penalty wasn't wrongly awarded. It allowed Kylian Mbappe to score an equaliser in second-half stoppage time.
