Williams driver Logan Sargeant failed to see out Q1 ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix, crashing out at the final corner after running wide out of the final chicane.

The young American was on his first flying lap of the session when he suffered from a snap of oversteer. Keeping his foot in so as not to ruin the lap, Sargeant was sent barreling towards the barriers.
His Williams car suffered significant damage with a long rebuild job coming the way of the engineers. The mood in the garage was one of visible frustration when the cameras panned to the Williams camp.
This crash will come as a major disappointment to Sargeant who was building up well during his first weekend at the Suzuka circuit, but another costly crash will do little to help his chances of retaining his seat for 2024 and beyond.

Speaking to Sky Sports F1 about the incident in the immediate aftermath, team principal James Vowles said: “Heart-breaking for Logan and the guys. The disappointment element is it’s a lot of work overnight.
“More importantly Logan built up to this weekend and started to have some good pace. Just can’t get it altogether.”
This marks the third weekend in four that Sargeant has found the barriers in some capacity after the young Floridian suffered a major shunt during qualifying at Zandvoort and a took a trip into the barriers during the race in Singapore.

Williams’ academy-backed rookie is still yet to score his first points in F1 with his dismal qualifying record a major contributing factor to those struggles. However, despite these difficulties, the 22-year-old still has a shot at retaining his seat for 2024.
According to a recent report from F1-Insider, Vowles won’t make a decision on Sargeant’s future until after his home race at the United States Grand Prix in October. This means that he has Sunday’s race plus two more to turn his fortunes around.
Despite season-long speculation linking him to the team, Mick Schumacher is not in contention for the second Williams seat with Aston Martin reserve driver Felipe Drugovich posing the biggest threat to Sargeant’s F1 career.
